Open vs. Closed Trailers in Auto Transport

May 16, 2022

When choosing the right shipping method for your vehicle, you’ll have several options to choose from. One of the significant decisions you’ll need to make is whether you want an open or closed carrier for your car transport. Below, we’ll go over the differences between open and closed trailers, as well as the pros and cons of each method of transportation.

What is an Open Trailer?

An open trailer is the most common method for auto transport. It is often a truck with a trailer that is open to the elements. You’ve probably seen these trailers on the highway; they are often the same size as a semi, pulling a trailer loaded with up to nine cars. However, there are many different types and sizes of trucks, but all open carriers leave your vehicle open to the elements.

What is a Closed Carrier?

A closed carrier looks like a tractor trailer; however, inside the closed truck is a double-decker rack for cars to be placed.  This is beneficial for both the customer and carrier because it provides additional protection while the vehicle is in transit. This option is most commonly used for luxury vehicles, vintage cars, and other rare or expensive options.

Pros and Cons of Open Carrier vs. Closed Carrier

Pros of Open Carriers for Car Shipping

Open carriers for auto transport are an excellent option for most situations. The standard open trailer has a double-decker design that allows the driver to fit up to nine cars of various shapes and sizes on board. Loading the vehicles is easy, but the driver will have to consider the weight and size of each vehicle to be loaded. Because of regulations from the DOT on how much weight each truck is allowed to haul, Preowned Auto Logistics makes sure to plan how each truck will be loaded before departure carefully.

Cars are driven carefully onto the trailer and arranged to distribute the weight. The driver will be sure to arrange the vehicles to meet the height requirements, as well, to avoid any potential problems on the road.

Pros:

  • Cost-effective
  • Safe
  • More availability
  • Efficient
  • More cars can fit on the trailer

Cons of Open Carriers for Car Shipping

Because of the design of open carriers, the primary concern for having your car shipped on an open trailer is the exposure to the elements.

Cons:

  • Exposure to the elements
  • Not suitable for some cars with retractable tops

Pros of Closed Carriers for Car Shipping

Unlike the open carriers, closed carriers are not exposed to the elements. These trailers feature fully closed designs that offer better protection for your vehicle from weather, road dust, and any other elements that may be encountered along the way.

Pros:

  • Premium protection
  • Great for luxury vehicles
  • Safer for vintage cars
  • Perfect for convertibles with soft tops

Cons of Closed Carriers for Car Shipping

Even with the added benefits, sometimes choosing a closed carrier instead of an open carrier may not be a great fit for you! Things like the height and size of your vehicle could come into play, but the increase in cost makes this choice less appealing for standard car shipping.

Cons:

  • Higher costs
  • Fewer cars can fit on a single trailer

Is an Open or Closed Trailer Right for My Auto Transport Needs?

Deciding on the right type of carrier for your car shipping service comes down to your budget, expectations, and what the shipping company has available. When you work with Preowned Auto Logistics, we’ll happily answer any questions you have about open and closed trailers so you can make the best decision for you!

Often, if you have a standard vehicle with no special requirements, an open carrier will be the best option for you. However, if you’re looking to move a luxury vehicle, a vintage car, or a sports car, you may want to consider upgrading to a closed carrier.

How to Ship a Car You Bought Online

May 9, 2022

So, you just bought your dream car online, and now you’re looking for the most effective way to get it shipped home. Below, we’ll go over how to ship a car you bought online with PAL and what to expect from using an auto transport company.

Increase in Out-of-State and Online Purchases

Recent years have seen a drastic increase in car shipping across the states because it is becoming more and more common to purchase vehicles online. There are a lot of reasons that individuals choose to buy cars online instead of from a dealer. Let’s look at some of the most common reasons to buy online.

Looking for a Specific Car

Often, when it’s time to buy a new car, you already know what you’re looking for. Most car owners prefer specific brands, makes, models, and even years of the vehicles they drive. Buying a car online allows you to search for those things so that you can get exactly what you want instead of choosing from what’s available on a dealer’s lot.

Additionally, finding classic cars, sports cars, and other luxury vehicles is often more accessible online because you can search across the USA instead of within driving distance.

Shopping for the Best Price

Another reason why customers are buying their cars online is it’s easier to find the best price for the car you want. The online market is very competitive, encouraging sellers to offer vehicles at great prices. Depending on where you are in the country, car prices can be significantly lower online than at any dealer nearby. This is especially true in densely populated areas like the Northeast and West Coast. Buying a car from a seller in the Midwest and shipping the car to your destination can lower your costs by thousands of dollars.

Condition of the Vehicle

Lastly, the increase in online car sales is also influenced by the ability to find a vehicle in better condition than those in your area. In the Northeast, a common problem with older vehicles is salt damage on the undercarriage from road treatments during the winter. This damage increased the potential for rust and other issues as the vehicle ages. Buying a car from a region with milder winters is just one of the ways that buying online can help you get a vehicle in better condition than at your local dealer.

Where to Shop for Cars Online

Where Can I Buy Cars Online?

There is no shortage of places to buy new and used cars online. A few of the major sites are Carvana, CarGurus, and Autotrader. All of these are major companies with a lot of inventory, which makes it easy to find exactly what you want. Additionally, most of these sites will offer to ship your car for you and have it delivered straight to your door.

However, if you decide not to buy from any of those major online car retailers, you still have tons of options. There are cars being sold on Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and just about anywhere that individuals can list their cars.

What Regions are Best to Buy Cars From?

Typically, cars in the northern states will have significantly more wear and tear even after just a few years because of the harsh road conditions in the winter. The salt used to treat roadways in the north is extremely damaging to vehicles and causes them to break down much faster.

Because of this, most car collectors and dealers look for vehicles on sale in the southern states. Cars from Florida are known for being “like new” even after up to five years on the road.

Can I Get a Loan for a Car Purchased Online?

Getting a loan for a car purchased online depends on a lot of factors. If you are buying from a dealership or one of the larger companies, you’ll likely be able to use a loan to buy your vehicle. If you’re buying from an individual, that’s a bit less likely. However, you can always go to your bank and discuss options with them to help you get the funds you need to make your purchase.

Benefits of Car Shipping vs. Driving

After you’ve purchased your vehicle online, you’ll have to decide how to get your new car to your home. If the seller has offered to ship your car with a carrier, you’ll just need to sit back and wait for your vehicle to arrive. However, you will need to either arrange for auto transport with a company like Preowned Auto Logistics or plan to drive the vehicle yourself in most situations.

Driving the car yourself is going to be very time-consuming. If you’ve purchased a vehicle from Florida and you’re planning to drive it to Massachusetts, you’re probably going to spend the better part of a week making the drive. Additionally, you’ll have to find a friend or family member who is willing to make the trip with you so that you can bring both your new vehicle and your old one home.

Investing this much time into getting your new car is also very costly. You’ll spend money on gas, food and coffee, and maybe even hotel rooms! All in all, it’s often much more efficient to have the car shipped with a carrier like PAL.

How to Get Your Car Shipped

Once you’ve chosen where you’ll be purchasing your car, you’ll have a better idea of how to get your car shipped to you. Some dealers will take care of the process for you, so you won’t have to talk to the carrier or arrange for pickup and delivery; the dealer will handle everything and keep you updated on your shipment.

Sometimes dealers won’t arrange for the shipment, but they will provide a list of preferred carriers so that you can book the auto transport with a company they are familiar with and know are reliable. Additionally, it’s essential to do your research and ask a lot of questions before picking a company.

If you’re working with an individual instead of a dealer, you will probably have to make all the arrangements yourself. In this case, be sure to do your research to find an auto transport company you feel comfortable with.

Registering a Vehicle Purchased Online

Another crucial step to purchasing a vehicle online is getting the car registered. Sometimes, the company you are buying from will handle this for you, but often it is going to fall on you to make the proper arrangements. This step is frequently overlooked by people buying cars online but planning ahead and getting everything lined up for your vehicle’s registration before it arrives will help you be able to drive your new car sooner than waiting for it to arrive before starting the registration process.

Terminal-to-Terminal Car Shipping

May 3, 2022

With terminal-to-terminal auto shipping, you’ll have the ability to ship your vehicle to a location near your home! Whenever you choose to ship your car, you’ll have to decide what methods make the most sense for your situation. Below, we’ll show you more reasons to choose terminal-to-terminal car shipping for your auto transport.

What is an Auto Transport Terminal?

Before deciding between terminal auto shipping and door-to-door services, you need to understand what an auto transport terminal is. These terminals are lots filled with vehicles waiting to be picked up and shipped to dealerships or customers’ homes.

These facilities are located throughout the USA and owned by different shipping companies and individual businesses alike. Companies like PAL often own several car shipping terminals and utilize other auto transport terminals to ensure you can get your car shipped efficiently and quickly every time.

Preowned Auto Logistics uses terminals that offer high-quality security for the vehicles so that you can drop off your car whenever convenient for you. Rest assured your vehicle will be safe and watched over until the driver loads it onto the car for shipment.

Benefits of Terminal-to-Terminal Auto Shipping

Whenever you use terminal-to-terminal auto shipping, you’ll have the peace of mind you need knowing your vehicle is being left at a secure facility until the driver is ready to load it onto the truck. All you have to do is find a time to stop by the terminal and leave your vehicle with the attendant.

PAL uses terminals where there is always an attendant on-site so that it’s easy to get your car checked in and perform the original inspection. After the inspection is performed and you have signed the paperwork, you’re ready to go. We’ll handle the rest of the process of getting your car shipped to your new location.

Dropping off your car at a terminal not only frees up your schedule, but it allows us to utilize better shipping lanes to get your car shipped more efficiently.

Additionally, you’ll find that dropping off your car at a terminal only takes about 10-15 minutes out of your day. As for waiting for a driver to arrive at your home, that can take an afternoon because of unexpected driving conditions or traffic. All around, using a terminal saves both you and your driver time.

How to Find a Car Shipping Terminal

Finding a car shipping terminal is easy because many companies throughout the country offer terminals. It’s especially easy to locate a terminal in high-traffic states like Florida, where seasonal travel leads to many cars being shipped to the state.

There are fewer terminals in low-traffic states like Ohio, so you may have to travel a little way to drop off your vehicle in those cases, but there are terminals available in every state. Additionally, PAL will work to agree on which shipping method is most convenient for you. This means if there isn’t a terminal within a reasonable driving distance, we’ll help you to determine if door-to-door shipping is a better option for your move.

Advantages of Terminal-to-Terminal vs. Door-to-Door Shipping

Door-to-Door

When shipping your vehicle straight from your home to your new destination, using door-to-door shipping can be very convenient. If you are not located near a shipping terminal, or you don’t have a secondary vehicle to use while your car is being shipped, this may be the right method for your shipment.

Whenever you use door-to-door shipping, your driver will work with you to find the perfect location for pickup and drop-off, whether it’s your driveway or a nearby parking lot. Door-to-door shipping also allows you to be present for both the initial inspection of the vehicle and the final inspection, so you’ll learn what to look for and confirm the vehicle’s condition first-hand.

Terminal-to-Terminal

Terminal-to-terminal shipping works a little differently. Instead of waiting for the driver to come to you, you simply drive your vehicle to a terminal and leave it in storage for the truck to pick up when it’s ready.

Often, this allows the cars to be shipped quickly and without delay because the terminals are frequent stopping places for carriers anyway. Instead of driving out of their way to find your home to load up the vehicle, the driver simply loads your car onto the truck while at a stop they were likely going to make regardless.

Because this method frees up both your time and the driver’s time, terminal-to-terminal shipping is often less expensive and quicker than door-to-door shipping. Additionally, you can ship your car well ahead of time and let it sit in the terminal, knowing it will be ready for you when you arrive at your destination.

“Kerri was completely wonderful in this process. Been searching for a company for months to pick up my vehicle from the body shop in California and deliver to North Carolina. After hearing all horrible stories from others and the internet, I was completely worried that I would have the same story. Moving to Another State with Your Car

February 18, 2022

When it comes to moving long distances, you’ll need to arrange a way to get your vehicle moved—letting Preowned Auto Logistics help you get your car moved safely and quickly will take some of the stress off your shoulders. Learn about moving to another state with your car by shipping your vehicle with Preowned Auto Logistics below.

Shipping Your Car vs. Driving Yourself

Although car shipping services have been around for decades, it is still a relatively new concept to consider shipping your personal vehicle when moving across the states for many people. However, this method of auto transportation makes for a stress-free, cost-effective, and reliable solution to moving your car.

Let’s take a look at the primary reasons to choose to ship your car instead of drive:

Safety

Shipping your vehicle with an auto shipping company is the safest way to move your vehicle for both you and the car. The professional transportation drivers ensure that the cars on the truck are protected from damage throughout the entire trip and have years of experience with standard routes and transporting cars across the states.

Time Commitment

Driving a vehicle, yourself is a considerable time commitment. You’ll likely have to take time off of work to make the trip, which will result in a loss of wages, and you may even have to spend over a week on the road. All of this time on the highway increases your risk for an accident and adds to the stress of your move.

Shipping your car allows you to drop off your vehicle at your convenience and pick it up from a terminal when it arrives. It’s much more freeing and gives you the ability to use your time more efficiently.

Cost

Driving your car seems like the most cost-effective way to move your car across the states; however, this is often not the case. Depending on the type of carrier you choose, the distance, and how far ahead of time you book your auto transport, shipping costs can be much lower than driving.

Convenience

When you don’t have to worry about the time commitment or the additional costs of driving your own vehicle during your move, you’ll be free to take care of more important things. Additionally, you can opt for our door-to-door car shipping service, where the driver will pick up your vehicle from as close to your home as possible and deliver it to your door.

What Do You Need to Ship Your Car?

Preparing your car for shipment is easy. First, you’ll need to remove all personal items from the vehicle. Carriers are required to stay within a specific weight limit, and reducing the additional weight ensures that drivers are able to load the trucks more easily. Additionally, your vehicle should have no more than a ¼ of a tank of gas.

Next, you’ll need to cancel the registration and insurance in your current state if you plan to move permanently to the new location. Cars being shipped on a carrier do not require plates or registration, so you can take those off before the vehicle is picked up to save you the hassle of dealing with it once you’re in the new state. We’ll cover your vehicle under our insurance policy while in transit, so you won’t have to worry about your car being uninsured during shipment.

Cost of Car Shipping to Another State

Now that you know the primary reasons you might choose to ship your car, let’s look at the costs of auto shipping.

Costs of Auto Shipping

Most auto transport companies follow a similar pricing system, so it’s easy to determine the standard rate for getting your vehicle transported across the states. Keep in mind that if you find a carrier that offers prices that seem too good to be true, it is likely a scam. Be sure to get quotes from several auto transport companies to ensure you know what the industry standard should look.

Some of the factors that can impact the cost of shipping your car include distance, size of the vehicle, cost of the vehicle, and how far ahead of time you’ve booked your shipment.

In general, booking weeks in advance will help to lower the cost of shipping your car. Another way to lower the cost is by opting for an open carrier instead of a closed carrier. The open carriers are the kind you see most often on the road and are a safe and reliable way to transport your vehicle.

Shipping a luxury vehicle will likely cost more because you’ll want to book a closed carrier for these types of cars. Additionally, you may have other special accommodations for shipping rare or luxury vehicles that can impact the price.

“We moved out of the state of Massachusetts to Florida last week and needed to have one of our vehicles shipped down too. I was a bit nervous about having my auto shipped and even more nervous about the length of travel. I was compelled to write a review because we had an amazing experience with Preowned Auto Logistics from start to finish. The communication was ongoing every step of the way, and our car was picked up and dropped off just as promised. It came right off the trailer looking just perfect. I really enjoyed chatting with several staff during the course of this endeavor. If you are looking to ship your vehicle, may you find peace in my personal experience? They are well organized, and you will feel that too”

“Bill set me up with Kerri to handle the transport of my SUV from Fort Lauderdale to Buffalo. Everything went smooth, from customer service to the gentleman/driver who picked up my vehicle. He took pictures of the vehicle and once it was loaded on the trailer. He gave me his cell number to call or text him, which l did once. Delivery was perfect! I am very pleased with Auto Logistics and will definitely use them in the future ”

Winter Car Shipping (Podcast)

February 11, 2022

Kerri Harris from Preowned Auto Logistics talks with John Maher about shipping cars in the winter. She talks about the potential challenges and gives consumers advice on how to simplify the process.

John Maher:Hi, I’m John Maher, and I’m here today with Kerri Harris of Preowned Auto Logistics, a car shipping and auto transport and logistics company in Massachusetts. And our topic today is winter car shipping. Welcome, Kerri.

Kerri: Hi, John. Thanks for having me.

Does PAL Ship a Lot of Vehicles in the Winter?

John: Sure. So Kerri, do you move a lot of cars in the wintertime?

Kerri: Yes, we do. I work in the seasonal department, so we move a really good amount of vehicles during that time. So we start, I’d say, in August, reaching out to customers and starting the bookings because there are so many people we try to get ahead of the bookings. So we start the outreach in August.

I’d say people start shipping as early as September. October is a very, very busy month for us. Then it slows down a little bit after Thanksgiving, it picks up for a week or so, week or two, then it slows down again. And then these next coming weeks, I’d say December 20th or December 17th through the second week in January, we’ll be extremely busy.

Is Winter Vehicle Shipping Due to People Who Have Seasonal Homes?

John: And is that mostly because of people who have a seasonal home and they’re moving, say, from the Northeast down to Florida for the winter? Is that why you see such an uptick during this time?

Kerri: Yes. All these customers, they’re transporting their vehicles from New England to somewhere down in Florida, somewhere south, even some of them are even going to South Carolina or in North Carolina, but mainly down in Florida.

And yes, they go, they leave, like I said, as early as September, mostly October and they stay for six, seven months and then they come back. They start coming back in February and then it picks up in March. It’s really busy in April and then May and June.

Benefits to Shipping Your Vehicle in the Winter

John: Are there actually any benefits to shipping your car during the winter as opposed to doing it in the spring or summer?

Kerri: Well, really people that are shipping their car are in the winter, it’s all about timing for them. They are leaving the cold weather up here to be down in the warm weather there. So, it’s not really optional for them to wait till the summer to ship in warmer weather.

Which Seasons Are Expensive for Shipping Cars?

John: Does it tend to be more expensive to move a car like in the late fall or early winter, or is it less expensive generally?

Kerri: It’s actually more expensive for the seasonal routes because there’s such a high volume. So in some cases, it can be more expensive. We do have flat rates, but during certain periods, such as the upcoming weeks, the last week in December, first week in January, the prices can be elevated due to the volume of cars that are going down.

When Is the Least Expensive Time to Ship Cars?

John: And so what would be the best way if somebody wanted to try to save money? What would be sort of the better time period to try to move it more in September and October, or if they can wait until like the end of January, would that be better?

Kerri: Well, yeah. So, what we do when we are booking the customers is it’s all about timing for them and when they want the car there. So, the best thing for them to do is obviously always book ahead. That way we can be ahead and know how many customers we have on certain dates and we can plan to expect large volumes, again, on certain dates.

And we do suggest booking earlier obviously, and then allowing enough time for delays and things like that. We always try to plan accordingly. We always want everyone’s cars to show up on time.

So in the winter, especially due to weather conditions, snow and whatnot, just for them to be patient and allow extra time is a good suggestion for them.

How to Prepare for Shipping Your Vehicle in the Winter

John: Yeah. So for those people that are moving it in the winter, like late December or January, like you said, are there any things that a person has to do to kind of get their car ready? Do they have to winterize their car somehow in order to prepare it for shipping?

Kerri: When they’re preparing it for shipping, they definitely want to, I mean, if they want to take it to their mechanic to get it checked, they should. Check all the fluids, make sure that there’s no anything leaking because that would affect other vehicles on the transport carrier. So, things like that. They don’t necessarily need to winterize it, which would be the draining of the fluids because they’ll need them, but they definitely want to have a full check of the car to make sure that everything is in working order, check the battery.

We require that they have a fourth tank of gas or less. For packing of items, they’re allowed to pack up to 100 pounds of items in the vehicle. And that’s like a really strict rule that we have. Then, we advise them to document any damage that they have on their car previous to shipping it. But if somebody’s worried about anything happening to their vehicle in the wintertime, another good suggestion for them is to ship it enclosed.

It’s a little bit more money. But if they’re really concerned about elements and salt or snow having an effect on their car, they can certainly ship it enclosed, which is a higher service, a little bit more of a premium to ship, but it definitely keeps the vehicle secure from any elements.

Should You Put Winter-Grade Oil in Your Vehicle Before Shipping?

John: So you mentioned making sure that you top off or check your fluids, that sort of thing. I expect antifreeze, of course, in the wintertime would be especially important. Should somebody get their oil changed or maybe put a winter-grade oil in their car to make sure that it’s going to run correctly for whoever’s shipping it?

Kerri: If they’re shipping it down south, they might want to prepare it for the warmer weather, I think. Because we’re not going to be driving it. We’re just going to be getting it on and off the carrier, but they want to prepare it for being down in Florida. If they were shipping it north, then that’s when they would definitely want to check their antifreeze, check the weather up this way, see if it’s colder. If it is colder, then they’d want to get an antifreeze that is weather regulated, that doesn’t freeze. They have certain antifreeze that you can buy for that and things like that definitely.

John: That’s a good point to make sure that you prepare your car for the location that it’s going to end up in …

Kerri: That it’s going to. Yeah, exactly. Yeah.

Do Delays Happen With Winter Shipping?

John: Right. Is there a possibility that your car shipment could be delayed because of weather, if snow storms come up and things like that?

Kerri: Yeah. Absolutely. So it’s all about safety. If there’s bad weather, our drivers, they’re very safe. So they’re going to definitely not take a chance and try to drive through some sort of bad storm. They’re going to pull over to a safe location and rest until it’s safe to drive again. So there could definitely be a delay due to snow. And that’s why when we’re booking these customers, we factor that into the booking so that if there is a delay, the car’s still going to get there on time. And we explain that to them.

John: Okay. So, you tell them like, okay, it’s going to take X number of days, assuming that there’s a delay of a couple of days or something like that.

Kerri: Yeah. So we just say, we like to plan that there could possibly be a delay and we don’t want your car to arrive late for you. So we always suggest that they drop it off seven to 10 days prior to the date that they want it there. And then in some cases, even a little bit earlier, if the holidays fall in there, like these next coming weeks, Christmas, and then New Year’s. So we have different scenarios for those dates.

How Does PAL Update Customers About Delays?

John: Right. How do you communicate with a customer if there is some sort of a delay because of the weather?

Kerri: Yeah. As soon as we find out about any delays, we call them right away and let them know what’s going on. We like to keep them informed at all times. That way, they’re not guessing and they can still plan. Because if they’re expecting the car on a certain day and it’s not going to be there, they need to know as soon as possible. Some of them have people that watch their homes and they’re going to be receiving the car and they need to organize it. So it’s just all about communicating with them. So yeah, we let them know right away.

Other Safety Issues With Winter Car Shipping

John: Are there any other sort of safety considerations that either customers or drivers need to be thinking about in terms of winter weather?

Kerri: Safety wise, just make sure that you remove all items, personal items out of the vehicle, anything that could be flopping around in the car. That’s why we don’t allow things to be packed in the vehicle, such as golf clubs. Those could, in transport, possibly bang into the window and damage the vehicle.

So, we don’t like anything to be inside the vehicle. If the customer wants to store items, they can put them in their trunk safely. Safety wise, make sure that the tire pressure is not low or too high. It needs to be at the right level so when they’re pulling it on and off the carrier there’s no issues. If they have any special type of special wheels or a lowered vehicle, let us know in advance so that we can plan accordingly.

John: Yeah. And then in terms of like, again, that winter weather, you said that the drivers are always very careful when they’re using their own discretion, if the weather is too bad for them to be driving they’ll pull over or wait for the bad weather.

Kerri: Yeah. Absolutely. Yeah. They’re not going to take a chance with nine cars on the back of the carrier to drive through bad weather.

The Cost of Moving Across the Country (Podcast)

February 4, 2022

Mike Scenna, Sales Manager at Preowned Auto Logistics, talks with John Maher about the cost of cross country moves. They discuss various aspects of the move including the cost of shipping a vehicle versus driving it yourself.

John Maher: Hi, I’m John Maher, and I’m here today with Mike Scenna, Sales Manager at Preowned Auto Logistics, a car shipping and auto transport and logistics company in Massachusetts. Today our topic is the cost of moving across the country. Welcome, Mike.

Mike Scenna: Hey John, how are you?

Cost of Hiring a Moving Company for a Cross-Country Move

John Maher: Good, thanks. So Mike, how much does it cost to hire a moving company to move all the way across the country?

Mike: Yeah. So if you’re looking to hire a moving company to do the whole thing, you want to be really hands off and just have a company take care of every element of moving across the country, you could spend upwards of $20,000 doing that.

It depends on the size of your house, how long you’ve been there, how much packing you want to do versus having the moving company do. This is a process that could take weeks, even months to get everything together, loaded up. And again, depending on the size of the house you’re in, this might be something that you need more than one truck to do. You’re going to need a crew of a bunch of different people. Yeah, it can get really expensive to hire a company to do something like this.

Cost of Renting a Truck for a Cross-Country Move

John: So say you don’t want to spend that much money and you think you can handle some of it yourself. Maybe you want to rent a truck or two and load it and drive it yourself… What are the costs of renting a moving truck in terms of the fees and also the gas that you have to spend on it?

Mike: Right, and this is the way you see most people do it, is rent a truck, try to do some of the stuff yourself, maybe hire some movers to help load the truck and also help unload the truck on the other end. You can certainly save money, but the costs add up pretty quickly when you’re doing it this way too.

You’ve got companies like U-Haul and Budget or something is another one of them. You can rent the truck yourself. You’re still looking at a few hundred dollars, close to $1000 just to rent the truck. The packing materials, that adds up too. That’s probably a few hundred dollars, three, four, maybe $500. And then gas, I mean, you’ve been out driving around in the world. You’ve seen how high that’s … What’s that up to? Depending where you are, 3.00 to 3.50 a gallon. So that’s going to be a few hundred dollars as well, getting across the country.

John: Right. If you’re driving 3000 miles across the country, say from the east coast to the west coast, that’s going to add up with the gas, especially in a big truck like that, that probably gets terrible gas mileage.

Mike: Right, right. Especially once it’s full of items, it’s heavier. Yeah, it gets expensive. That’s just the gas and the equipment rental. Now, like you just said, 3000 miles. How many times do you have to stop and stay at a hotel? How much food do you have to buy along the way? These are all things that people sometimes overlook, but they add up quickly. So again, you’re in definitely several thousands of dollars to do it that way as well.

Extra Moving Costs to Consider

John: What are some other types of costs for packing that are involved in moving your whole house? You’re completely packing up your house and moving from one place to another place. You mentioned packing materials and things like that. What costs are we looking at there?

Mike: Yeah, that’s one of those ones that, again, gets overlooked easily. It’s funny. I was in the moving industry myself and I actually just moved recently a couple weeks ago, and still forgot how much you spend on the materials, how many times you make trips back to the store to buy more boxes, more paper and tape.

I mean, I spent probably about $600 to $700 just now moving to get all that stuff, and I don’t think that’s uncommon. You don’t realize how much stuff you have in your home until you start packing it up and you realize that you’ll continue to fill boxes. And it just never seems to empty all the cabinets in every corner out. It just keeps coming and coming and coming.

John: Right. And you’re like, where did all this stuff come from? I mean, especially if you’re in a house that you’ve been in for possibly even decades or something like that, you’ve accumulated a lot of things that you’ve forgotten about for many, many years.

Mike: Right, yeah. It becomes like a scavenger hunt and you’ll be like, “What’s this? I don’t even remember this.” And you keep putting it into boxes and again, running out and buying more to pack up more stuff.

Cost of Cleaning When Moving

John: Do people have to clean their old house after they’ve packed up everything? Do they then have to clean it for whoever is maybe purchasing the house? Or especially if you have an apartment, certainly you’d have to clean the apartment so that you don’t have to forgo your security deposit or something like that. Are cleaning fees part of it as well?

Mike: Yeah. So if you’re selling your home, so someone else is buying it, you should do it. You should clean. I think it’s usually part of most purchase and sale agreements and just proper etiquette. I think it’s good practice to just make sure the house is clean when everything’s moved out. But for an apartment, certainly most likely you have a security deposit on the line, so you’re really going through everything with a fine tooth comb to make sure that you’re going to get every dollar back from that security deposit.

So that is something that you do need to consider when you’re getting towards the end and you feel as though you’re finished up, you do have to remember you might have to hire a cleaning company or spend another half a day making sure the place is looking good.

Cost of Moving Furniture Versus Selling It and Replacing It at the New Location

John: Right. Might you have to even purchase some new furniture or something like that for your new home? I mean, that could be one way to avoid having to move all of your furniture, would be to maybe sell it or get rid of it on one end, but then that means you have this added expense of having to buy new furniture for your new house.

Mike: Yeah. I’ve gotten that question a lot actually. Is it cheaper to sell furniture and buy furniture on the other end than it is to move it? You can look at it a few different ways and it really comes out to, depending on the quality of furniture you want to buy, it usually is pretty similar in cost. It is pretty expensive.

The furniture takes up the most space on the truck. So that adds up quickly and can potentially put you over the edge to get another truck and another set of movers or drivers, more fuel. So it can add up, but selling the furniture is a lot of work too. You might have to pay fees for posting it in certain areas to get it sold, and then you have to locate furniture at your destination, and depending on the delivery fees and options they have there, the costs are going to add up quickly too, to get that new furniture.

Cost of Shipping Vehicles Cross Country

John: And then lastly, in terms of moving your cars, talk a little bit about the cost of car shipping and what’s involved in the cost of moving one or maybe even multiple cars that you have in your family across the country.

Mike: Yeah. So as far as shipping a car, we’re talking about across the country, so somewhere around 3000 miles, something like the Boston area to Los Angeles. Right now in this market, you’d probably spend about $2200 to $2300 to do something like that. If you had multiple cars, you can certainly save some money, as you and I have talked about in the past.

That’s enticing to a driver to pick up multiple cars in one location and bring multiple cars to another location. It’s just less stops they have to make on the pickup end and less stops on the delivery end. So you could save a couple hundred dollars as you start to add more cars to that shipment, for sure.

Other Considerations When Shipping Cars Cross Country

John: Any other considerations in terms of car shipping? I know that some people might think it’s better to just take their cars and maybe they hire the mover to move all their stuff and drive the truck, but then they want to just drive their cars themselves. Are there any issues with that?

Mike: So you take that number that we just talked about, so 2200 to $2300 to have it shipped. A lot of people think, okay, I’ll save some money and drive the car and follow the moving truck across the country, but there’s just all of those costs that you have to consider the whole trip.

So if it’s going to be three or four days, that’s three or four nights at hotels, that’s three meals each day, so you’re looking at 10, 12 meals along the way. Gas, like we just talked about, that’s going to add up. 3000 miles in a short amount of time is also not great for your vehicle either. I mean, you’re going to depreciate it by 3000 miles, but you also run the risk of having to have a repair done, an issue with the car happening along the way.

So it’s another one of those things that you want to plan properly and consider how much is your time worth. What’s the cost of the plane ticket and getting the vehicle on a truck and shipped out there and having that peace of mind to just fly out there, have your car waiting there for you, you’re ready for the movers to come. You most likely have also saved some money doing it that way.

How Car Shipping Can Make Moves Easier

John: Right. And then you’re maybe a little bit more ready to accept all of that stuff and start moving it into your new house and setting it all up, as opposed to, like you said, taking the last three or four days to drive all the way across the country, and then you’re exhausted, and probably the last thing you want to do to start unpacking boxes.

Mike: Right, exactly. Moving is one of the most stressful things you can do. So at the end of the day, no matter which way you decide to go, it is going to be expensive. So it’s good to just prepare, almost over prepare, and not really put any unnecessary or unneeded burdens on yourself. It’s not going to be easy.

PAL Business Services (Podcast)

January 28, 2022

Jeremy Louisos, Senior Vice President and Kevin Lombardi, VP of Business Development at Preowned Auto Logistics talk with John Maher about PAL’s business services. They explain how PAL helps dealerships ship vehicles more effectively, and they also talk about the logistical guidance and customer service PAL provides to its business clients.

John Maher: Hi, I’m John Maher. And I’m here today with Jeremy Louisos, Senior Vice President and Kevin Lombardi, VP of Business Development at Preowned Auto Logistics, a car shipping and auto transport and logistics company in Massachusetts. Today, our topic is PAL business services. Jeremy and Kevin, welcome.

Jeremy Louisos: Hey John, thanks for having us.

Kevin Lombardi: Greetings.

What Services Does PAL Provide for Businesses?

John: So tell me a little bit more about what services PAL provides for businesses.

Jeremy: Yeah. So I mean, traditionally, what we’ve looked at is really anything that the dealer needs to do or any sort of business. It’s mostly been dealerships for us, but any business that needs to move a vehicle that can’t be driven… that’s the place where we jump in. So that’s included dealer purchases, dealers getting vehicles that they’re buying so they can sell them at their dealership, sending their trade-ins to the auction, swapping with other dealerships, and delivering customer cars.

Traditionally, those are the four areas of service, but now that technology is really infused itself in our industry, we break it down a little bit differently. So the big focus right now is that we have dealerships and digital options, another business in the auto industry, really working on sourcing inventory, getting those vehicles, right? If you go by the dealership lots these days you’re going to see a pretty empty piece of real estate.

So all of these folks that are selling vehicles in the auto industry now are trying to get vehicles to their locations so they can sell them. So sourcing that inventory is one of the big focuses for us. Online purchases, right? So those very same options, those very same dealerships that are trying to move maybe into a digital space. And then the purely digital sellers of vehicles. Those fully online digital platforms are selling to customers all over the country. It’s decentralized now, and now they need those vehicles delivered with the same type of showroom experience and customer care that they would get at the dealership with some we’ve been doing for 20 years.

And then finally, lastly, and most exciting to the technology conversation is the auto transportation data piece. There’s a lot of value in being able to connect with these platforms that these businesses are using and pass information like how much it’s going to cost to move a vehicle. This is when it’s going to be done. Allowing them to generate orders in our system through an API automation, and then passing those statuses back to the dealerships and giving them a portal to view all that information. So really exciting new services from inventory sourcing, online purchases, and then the data that kind of keeps that whole logistics solutions ecosystem going around.

How Does PAL Help Dealerships Source Inventory?

John: Okay. So why don’t we talk about each one of those in a little bit more depth. And we’ll start with the dealerships or auction sites, sourcing inventory. Maybe tell me a little bit more about sourcing inventory and what you mean by that and how it is that you guys intercede and help with that.

Kevin: So historically we would speak to the dealership and solicit our transportation services. They had a system in place historically of buying from auctions and swapping with other dealerships as their inventory required, or to help their customers to find vehicles that satisfy them. So today it’s difficult to acquire vehicles. So we’re offering our data and our ability to search further beyond their traditional access points to acquire vehicles. And that includes private purchases.

I would never have thought about it when I started 10 years ago, that they would be looking through Craigslist and private party sites to find vehicles to recondition and resell. So we’re assisting in all those areas as a transportation company in trying to kind of instruct and consult to our dealership clients that they’re not limited to their region or immediate territory. They can go far beyond those states and those regions.

Jeremy: Yeah. Exactly. These dealerships maybe had a few different sources for getting these vehicles. Maybe it was a local auction. Maybe they were wholesaling from some other dealerships in the area. Now they really need to look anywhere in the country or even beyond sometimes to try to find new sources. And so helping connect those dots from a transportation and logistics solutions perspective is something that we’ve been doing a ton of these days.

Kevin: And additionally, a dealership doesn’t have to limit itself to its local customers. Through online purchasing opportunities, they can sell to customers all over the country because inventory is that depleted. So our additional sales value to our customer is, hey, leverage what we do. We can transport anywhere in the country door to door. Offer another service to your customer. We call that the final mile. We can get that card delivered to your door. And we help dealerships compete with the CarMax’s and Carvana’s of the world. And that could be done no matter what your size.

How Do You Find Vehicles for Dealerships?

John: And how is it that you actually find all those vehicles for a dealership? Do you make databases of all the vehicles that are available from all these different sources so that then you can share that information with the dealership?

Kevin: That’s a great question. And we’re realizing the value of our own data based on the inquiries that we’ve received recently. We understand what cars come from where. So if a Toyota store wants to know where their vehicles are, we have access to that data. The next generation is going to be electric vehicles. We only have data going back to 2017 on the transportation data of electric vehicles. So those vehicles are going to start to get traded in. So when we find us shipping those vehicles, we’re going to have even more valuable data for them to understand a whole new market. I think, in some cases by 2035, you’re only going to be able to purchase an electric vehicle.

So as those purchasing requirements move through the years, we have the original data on the movement of those vehicles. We even did a kind of a recent data evaluation on what states have shipped the heaviest cars. Okay. Now think about the value of that. So when we transport vehicles, weight and distribution are critical and we have that data. Because that’ll affect insurance, that’ll affect the size of the carrier. What can and cannot be moved, how it’s moved. And this data continues to evolve.

How Can PAL Help Dealerships With Online Car Purchases?

John: All right. Let’s move to the next thing, which is online purchases. Tell me a little bit more about how things have changed in recent years with online purchases of vehicles and again, where you guys can step in and help assist in terms of, especially with your business customers and dealerships, trying to buy cars online.

Kevin: Sure. So today, consumers are far more educated than they ever were. We have the internet. Through Google search, you can find the type of car, reviews on the car, how much the car costs relatively. Well, now you’re not limited to regions to which to buy your car. Since inventory is so low, it’s not unlikely for somebody to find a used car specifically, or a year and a make that they want to buy. And now they can reach out anywhere in the country to find a car. And of course, the value to us is that we provide the shipping. And with our advanced tools, we can provide current real time costs and real time ETA’s.

Jeremy: One of the things we saw throughout the pandemic, this is something that we saw coming a few years down the road, is that there was going to be a move to online purchases. That things were going to be more decentralized and folks would be less locked into their region when making the purchase of their vehicle.

I think COVID really sped that process up. What we predicted was going to happen in maybe two to five years happened in a few months. And so now we’re living in this world where the online retail platforms are very much alive and well. Several consumers are using different versions of this, and it works really well. It’s a great way.

I mean, don’t get me wrong. Our customers that are still doing the brick and mortar sales experience, they have a service that is traditional that a lot of people still like. But for folks ready to jump online, it works great provided that you can get the vehicle to where it needs to be. And that’s really where we’re proud to step in.

When it comes to delivering a retail experience for these clients, we’ve been doing this for our entire career as logistics solution providers. And it kind of, in some ways, feels as though our moment has arrived. Hey, the thing that we do really well is now something that everybody’s asking for. Can you deliver this vehicle professionally? Can you communicate with the customer, set expectations, make sure it’s going to get there when you told your customer it’s going to get there, kind of giving an experience that’s maybe been lacking in this industry. We are able to provide that for folks now that are ready to jump online and buy a car.

How Does PAL Help Dealerships With Transportation So They Can Sell Vehicles Online?

John: Right. So is that really the biggest benefit that you have in terms of online car purchases that maybe dealerships were hesitant to jump online and sell their cars online because of that final piece, like you said, that delivering the car to the customer, that they just didn’t know how that was going to work. Or they couldn’t trust that the delivery was going to happen in a timely manner, that it was going to happen in a professional manner.

And so they just kind of didn’t want to deal with this whole online thing. But now that they’ve been somewhat forced to in order to stay in business and to keep selling cars and to open up their market to so many more people across the country. Now they really need to have that solution and be able to trust that it’s going to work and that it’s going to be cost effective for their customers. And that’s where you really come in.

Jeremy: I think that was certainly one of the reasons that folks were hesitant at first. There are a lot of different cases, right? There are some folks that just say, “hey, this is the way we’ve always done it. Maybe this online thing is kind of a fad.” Like you said, it’s caught up to everyone, and whatever their hesitancy was, they’ve realized, this is a place that I need to be.

And when they start to take their first steps onto that path and they’re like, oh yeah, we got to actually deliver this car to somebody. Someone across the country just bought this thing. And they’re calling maybe their local tow company who’s like, you want me to go where? Or they find someone online and they realize that not everybody does this. And this is something that we’ve specialized in for quite some time.

So we’re really happy to partner with these retailers, explain to them what that process is. And really, I think the biggest piece of value, next to the technology bit, is how we can help with customer experience. We want to integrate with their systems and make this a fluid experience for their customers or for their internal teams that are facilitating these moves. But then we also don’t want those customers to have to become the support department for a whole logistics experience or for the vehicle delivery. When those customers have questions, you really can’t pass that customer to too many companies. That’s something that we pride ourselves on, customer service and technology. That customer service comes first. We’ve been doing this… well, I think if we combine our experience, we get to a pretty high number of years doing this.

And being able to have those conversations, to answer questions, to set expectations, to guide someone that’s new to the auto transport process, all the way to their final amount of delivery is of huge value.

Kevin: And finally, so we talk about the dealership who are our customers, and their customers are mimicking the same behavior. So as dealerships become more comfortable selling cars online, consumers become more comfortable buying cars online. And I’ll give you a personal experience. I bought the same car or the upgraded model of the same car for 10 years from the same dealer.

I go every three years and three months and update my lease. Well in February my lease came up and there were no cars available. Well, here, lies an opportunity. I decided to go buy a car that I otherwise probably would have never purchased if this didn’t happen. I bought a car out of California through a Detroit auction and had it delivered to my house. I would’ve never dreamed of buying something online. Okay. But I was limited. So I had to make a decision. And I bought a fun car and I’m glad I did it. It arrived safely and the cost was very reasonable and we did it. So I have a personal experience about us transporting vehicles long distances.

How PAL Can Help With Logistics Management

John: Right. Absolutely. And like you said, just more and more people are doing that. Whether it’s somebody up in the north buying a car from Florida, maybe a classic car or something like that, that doesn’t have any damage from the salt and things like that on the road. Or there’s all kinds of reasons why somebody would purchase a car online these days and it’s just happening more and more. And more and more dealers just need to have somebody that they can rely on and trust.

Jeremy: Yeah, absolutely.

Kevin: Yeah. And finally, the data. So we find ourselves soliciting our services to a very unique customer. There are companies out there that value vehicles for a number of different reasons. And we have the capacity to present information and data where we can provide the cost of delivery for singles or multiples to different regions. Original equipment manufacturers, finance companies, leasing companies take on their trades. They want to maybe move those vehicles to a market where they can get the best price. Well, through a technical tool, we can provide the cost and the timeliness of that move that could help in the valuation of those vehicles for these very unique digital retailers.

Jeremy: Which really is part of that exciting new space for us. Traditionally, our business customers, as we discussed, were dealerships or the companies with the inventory that they were moving around. Now, we’re looking at customers and partnerships with other third party vendors within the auto transportation space.

Like Kevin mentioned a service that might provide valuations for vehicles or an inventory management system that maybe needs to provide recommendations for that dealership that’s managing 12 different regions and has to move inventory around and try to sell it in one market because it’s going to do a little bit better. Well, unless you have that all in cost, knowing how much it’s going to cost to get it to that market, you really don’t know if that’s the best deal.

And that’s a place where our data, what I like to call the best shipping rate, that’s the rate that’s going to get the thing moved for you in a timely manner. Right. We can provide that. We can provide the ETA. And then as I mentioned before, I think another piece of this is just supporting that experience. If there’s any questions we can handle those for you. And we have the technical ability to tie this into your existing platforms through API integrations or whatever other system you might use.

So we’ve had more of those conversations in the past year than we ever had in the past. Something we’ve thought a lot about, we’ve been excited to take on. We were ready for that moment. The industry wasn’t quite there and now we have people coming to us saying, Hey, so I need to figure out how much it’s going to cost to deliver this for a number of my customers that I’m providing this data for, or this management service for, can you help us out? Oh, by the way, can you help us move the thing afterwards? And can you let us know where the vehicle is in transit? And can you answer our customers’ questions if they have any? The answer is yes to all those.

John: Right.

Kevin: So very quickly we move from a transportation logistics company to a technology company that provides transportation and logistics management.

John: Yeah. And the main data that you’re talking about there is data like quotes on how much it’s going to cost to move a car from this place to this place. And then the timing of that as well, how quickly can it get there? And then, like you said, integrating that data into the management system, the dealer’s management system, so that all of that information is right in their own system. That’s what you’re able to provide now.

Kevin: Correct.

Jeremy: Yeah. The more seamless that is for the users, the better the experience is for everybody.

How Does PAL Provide Value to Business Clients?

John: All right. Any final thoughts on your PAL business services and where things go from here?

Kevin: Yeah. It’s a really exciting discussion and that’s all we’re doing now. When I started, I was really in charge of selling transportation services to dealerships. Now we’re having dialogue with really smart people on how to create solutions in an otherwise very complex and difficult industry. And we’re really at the forefront of solving these problems. That’s exciting.

Jeremy: Yeah. Building off that for me, I couldn’t agree more. Something that really gets me excited is really moving into that thought leadership space, being some of the first folks to consider some of these new challenges to meet the moment of the day and to have a voice that really adds value to the auto industry right now. It feels meaningful. And it’s something that I think gets us all fired up every day. So yeah, we’re excited to keep this rolling.

Explaining the Increase in Car Shipping Costs (Podcast)

Domenic Hooven, Account Manager at Preowned Auto Logistics, talks with John Maher about car shipping costs. He explains the factors that increased shipping costs in 2021, and he makes predictions about 2022.

John Maher: Hi, I’m John Maher. I’m here today with Domenic Hooven, Account Manager at Preowned Auto Logistics, a car shipping and auto transport and logistics company in Massachusetts. And our topic today is the increase in car shipping costs. Welcome, Domenic.

Domenic Hooven: Hey, John. Appreciate you having me on. I’m excited to talk about the things that are going on right now in the trucking industry and specifically, the auto shipping industry and hopefully, clarify some things for some folks that are going on right now.

What Factors Affect Shipping Costs?

John: Absolutely. Yeah. So what are some of the factors that have impacted the car shipping costs this year, which seem to have gone up a little bit recently?

Domenic: Yeah. So there’s a few different factors that are kind of working against the auto shipping industry right now. First and foremost, I feel like everyone’s mind automatically goes to the gas prices. Now, where that holds true, it’s not the only factor affecting the industry as a whole right now. Yes, the gas price affects the price of shipping a vehicle, especially when you’re spanning many miles. In our case, it’s Massachusetts to Florida.

But another really big factor is the shortage of truck drivers nationwide. I mean, I’m sure if you see the news, they can’t get truck drivers to bring cargo out of the ports. Well, we’re certainly not immune to those issues in the car shipping industry as well.

I was reading somewhere that the U.S. has a quarter million driver shortage. So there’s, right off the bat, the supply of drivers is down and the demand is high. So right then and there, the price is going to increase. And there’s a lot more people shipping their vehicles right now. That’s another factor. We’ve seen so much more volume than in years past. And these drivers, they’re going to go where the money is. They’re going to fill their load and get as much as they can for it on that load. It’s really a price competitive market, but to receive the best service in this industry and get things moved promptly, unfortunately, it’s much more expensive than it was in the past.

How Are Gas Prices Right Now?

John: Right. Right. So obviously, like you said, the increase in gas prices is one thing. The driver shortage, where you have to pay drivers more, maybe, in order to get somebody to move the cars, that’s another factor. Let’s talk about each one of those things a little bit more.

In terms of gas prices, and I looked the other day and nationwide, we’re in the middle of December of 2021 here, when we’re talking, and the gas price is now up to about $3.34 a gallon on average in the United States. I know that you generally deal mostly with shipping from the Northeast down to Florida and back. Is that about the same average gas price on the East Coast or is it even more?

Domenic: Oh, yeah. I mean, personally, when I go to the pump, I see high threes or even low fours. We certainly haven’t seen a hike in gas like this in quite some time. And obviously, we have customers that have us ship their car year after year and they see the price of gas increase by a certain percentage. But other external factors have made us increase our price by even a larger percentage, because it’s all these things stacked on top of each other.

And they don’t see the correlation, other than the gas prices. So it’s certainly one of those things, but I wouldn’t even say it’s the biggest issue. I would lean more towards the shortage of drivers and availability causing the price to go up more so than gas. But yeah, it certainly does have a bearing on us getting cars shipped as well.

What Is Causing the Driver Shortage?

John: Right. Yeah. And like you said, it’s a direct thing that people can obviously see. Okay, if the price of gas goes up, you’re going to have to make that money back somehow. So you have to increase the price of the car shipping, because it’s just a certain number of miles. It’s a certain number of gallons of gas that the truck is using. And you’re going to have to pass that on to the consumers. So that’s an obvious one. Talk a little bit more about that driver shortage. And where do you think that that’s coming from? Did it happen because of COVID? Or are there other factors that are leading to that driver shortage?

Domenic: Yeah. We were getting things moved very quickly at the beginning of the pandemic, for some reason. It seemed like it was almost flipped. It felt like the market for drivers was very saturated. There were a lot of drivers. Things were getting moved quickly and cheaply. And now, for whatever reason, maybe drivers saw that the market was too competitive and they got out of hauling cars or they may have gone into hauling some other sort of freight, that may hold true.

All I can say is that I can see kind of this flip, where it’s definitely more difficult to find a driver to keep in our network, keep their truck full and have them work with us consistently without venturing out and try to find onesie-twosie here just to make an extra buck or two.

We like to establish relationships with drivers so that we can keep their trucks full. But sometimes, they see it more beneficial to go and to have five different pickups, five different drop offs. So in the past, we were able to get drivers at a great price, because they like the convenience of the one-pick, one-drop. Now, we’re seeing a little bit of a change on how the market is working right now.

Other Causes for the Increase in Car Shipping Costs

John: Okay. And then you mentioned also that more cars are being shipped now. I think there’s probably a few factors. I mean, a lot of people are buying cars online now. I think that’s probably a major industry shift. And then, a lot more people are working remotely now as well. And so maybe that sort of figures into it as well.

Then there’s also a lot of people getting older and retiring. Maybe they’re moving and trying to save some money by relocating to different places, whether it’s moving from the North down to the South, or from the East Coast to the Southwest or something like that. Do you agree with all of those things? And are there other reasons that you think that there’s been a big increase in the number of cars that are being shipped?

Domenic: Yeah. Well, speaking from personal experience, just as there’s a shortage of truck drivers, there’s also a shortage of cars. And I’ve had so many new customers that I’ve spoken to that have never shipped a car before. The common practice was for them to go down to Florida and rent a car for the three months that they’re there.

And if they can even get a rental car, it’s more expensive than shipping their own vehicle down. So we’re seeing this whole thing… people finding new avenues of traveling seasonally, they’re seeing car shipping as a more viable option than renting a car now. That also has an effect on why more people are shipping vehicles.

Like you said, to your point about the people working remotely now, again, based on personal experience, I know a few people that reached out to me to move their car, because they said, “I work remotely. I can live wherever I want now.” And then we have folks reaching out to us, it’s corporate relocation, in some cases, but we’re seeing less of that and more of people just living where they want to now, because they’re not really restricted to where they have to be for their job.

John: Right. Why not live in Southern California or something like that, where the weather’s nice all the time, instead of in the Northeast where we get snow in the winter, etc.? A lot more people are doing that.

Domenic: Yeah. Yeah, for sure.

How Can People Reduce Car Shipping Costs?

John: So what are some ways, given that the price of shipping a car has increased this year, if people still want to ship a car, but they are trying to kind of cut costs as much as possible, what are some ways that they might be able to get the best deal or reduce their car shipping costs?

Domenic: So I would say the best way to reduce costs is to use our terminals. I think that is a great way to reduce costs. So I know it’s very convenient for folks to have their cars picked up at their residence and then sent to their residence in Florida. And that’s just speaking about that example, because we ship a lot of cars from Massachusetts to Florida. So I think the most vital option is to have a home base, like we do. We get folks to drop their cars off here. And then they’re flexible as far as picking it up at a terminal down in Florida. So it does provide convenience for drivers. Like I said earlier, it’s the one-pick, one-drop or one-pick, couple of drops. And typically, we’re able to get the cars shipped cheaper for that. And then we can pass those savings on to our customers.

But that’s not always the best choice for our customers. Sometimes they need door-to-door service. But I think that’s a great way to cut down on cost is to utilize those terminals. And, in our case, they’re here in Massachusetts and in Florida. But just in general, finding some sort of terminal anywhere can save money, where you say you’re shipping from Massachusetts to California, we’re trying to expand our terminal network, also. Finding any way we possibly can to make shipping a car more economical for our customers.

Can You Save Money With Open Transport?

John: Right. And then obviously, there’s your choice of how you want to ship your car, whether it’s on an open carrier or in a closed transport. Do you see some people maybe choosing that open carrier more often, now, because it’s a little less expensive than doing the closed transport?

Domenic: Oh, yeah. Yeah. And we talked about how drivers are few and far between. For closed carriers, that holds true even more so. They’re requiring a premium to get a vehicle shipped, because there’s even less of a supply for enclosed carriers. So that gap between shipping a car open and enclosed has widened pretty significantly from last year to this year alone.

Some people, they’re very particular about their vehicle and they have the money and they’re willing to invest it in shipping it enclosed and that’s great. We’re more than happy to help them with that. But I recommend that for Mercedes, Audi’s, or very nice cars, but we also ship plenty of those cars open with no issues. So I tend to steer my customers towards shipping open just if they have a time constraint and they want it moved quickly. I usually advise my customers that it’s going to move quicker on an open carrier and it’s less expensive.

Are Car Shipping Costs Going to Increase in 2022?

John: So in terms of car shipping costs, do you anticipate anything changing in 2022? Do you see where things are going?

Domenic: I hope so. I really hope it’s going to change. Where we can see an immediate change will probably be the gas prices. But time will tell as far as the shortage of drivers. Availability of drivers is really everything. I think it’s the single most driving factor of the price.

So I truly believe that I think the gas prices will get better, so we might see some sort of upside next year. But as far as the shortage, I guess, only time will tell. I’m optimistic, though. I think this industry is forever growing. And we’re going to find ways to make things more economical for our customers.

What You Need to Know About Oversized Vehicle Shipping

December 23, 2021

Whether you’re looking to move a camper, an SUV with a roof rack, or specialized equipment, Preowned Auto Logistics can help you with oversized vehicle shipping across the USA and more. Learn more about our services and how to tell if your vehicle is oversized below.

How Big is an Oversized Vehicle?

Generally, anything that is larger than the factory standard car, SUV, or pickup truck is considered an oversized vehicle. That includes vehicles with roof racks, SUVs with trailer hitches, and trucks with large tires or lifts. All these factors affect how the vehicle sits on the trailer and can make shipping more difficult.

When it comes to roof racks and lifts, the increased height on a car or SUV can cause problems with the trailer meeting the 13’ 6” height requirement, while hitches and other extensions on the vehicle can cause it to take up more than one space on the trailer.

Shipping Oversized Vehicles on a Trailer

Oversized vehicles are often labeled as such because it takes up more than one space on a trailer. For many auto shipping companies, this is the primary factor in determining if your vehicle is oversized. Additionally, car shipping companies may use other equipment and shipping methods for larger vehicles or equipment. Some oversized vehicles, like backhoes, may require specialized equipment to ship.

Why Do Oversized Vehicles Need Special Accommodations?

Auto transport companies qualify some vehicles as oversized to help regulate the loads on their trucks and ensure the safety of all the vehicles on board. Auto shipping companies, like PAL, must meet a 13’ 6” height requirement, which ensures the truck will not encounter any problems with overpasses. Additionally, the width of the trailer has to be considered, so trucks with oversized tires may require special accommodations to ensure they fit on the trailer properly.

Other Ways to Ship Oversized Vehicles

Depending on the conditions of the market and the vehicle to be shipped, car carriers may use rail transportation. This is a rare occurrence in the auto shipping industry, but it can happen from time to time. In this case, the trailer will be loaded onto the rail to be shipped from one destination to another.

Cost Difference for Shipping Oversized Vehicles

Shipping an oversized vehicle will come with additional costs; however, the prices vary greatly depending on the season, industry state, driver and carrier’s capacity, and market rates. The good news is that even if a vehicle has to take up two spaces on a trailer, you won’t be expected to pay for both spaces. Instead, the standard fee will have a slight up-charge to cover the second space.

In general, you should expect to pay around 30-40% more than the standard fee for shipping an oversized vehicle.
