Moving Tips: How to Contact a Moving Company

Moving Tips: How to Contact a Moving Company

December 21, 2022

Moving is one of the most stressful times in anyone’s life. Whether you’re moving for work, pleasure, or a change of pace, packing up your entire life into boxes and starting over can be daunting.

One of the best ways to make your move less stressful is by hiring a moving company to help. Moving companies can do everything from packing your whole home to just picking up the boxes and getting them to the next destination. Below, we’ll show you the best moving tips for dealing with moving companies.

When is the Best Time to Call?

You want to call the moving company as soon as possible. This will give them a heads-up, making it easier to plan and ensuring that there are no last-minute phone calls to get your stuff moved. Also, booking ahead of time can help you set goals for packing, organizing your things, and more.

How Far Ahead of Time Should I Book a Moving Company?

A good rule of thumb is to try to call six months ahead of your move. In some cases, you won’t be able to plan this far ahead, but it is a great way to avoid last-minute delays, scheduling problems, and more. Be sure to keep in touch with your moving company to keep them updated on the exact date of the move and other details.

Six months might seem like a long time, but it gives the moving company the foresight to plan for your specific availability instead of making last-minute changes, which usually incur a greater cost.

Having a goal for your moving date can help to motivate you to actually organize, pack, and get rid of items you won’t be taking with you. It’s better to do this ahead of time than   to be rushed at the last minute.

Should You Call Before You Have a Moving Date?

Calling a moving company without the exact dates is a great way to give them the time to prepare for your move and plan ahead for availability. Additionally, if you call them and give the company a rough idea of the month you’ll be needing their services and the distance of the move, it will save you time later on. By communicating with the company ahead of time, you are letting them know they have your business, and they’ll be able to help you plan.

It Lets Them Plan Ahead

As mentioned above, calling the moving company as soon as you have an idea of when you’ll be moving helps the company to plan ahead. They’ll make a note on their calendar and start planning which truck/driver/movers will be available those days to help you move. As long as you keep them updated on the progression of the move, a six months’ notice is a great way to help the moving company make your moving day smooth.

They Can Help You Plan for the Move

Another way that notifying the company early is helpful for both parties is that it gives the company the option to help you plan for the move. Depending on how long you have before the potential moving date, the moving company will be able to give you tips on what to pack first and how to best organize your things for the move.

What Questions Should I Ask a Moving Company Before Booking?

Any time you are booking a service with a company, you’ll want to know the details of the contract. There are a few simple questions that you can ask to help you get on the same page as the moving company.

What Will the Company Do, and What am I Expected to Move Myself?

The most important question is, “what will be covered in my moving service,” and “what am I expected to do?”

Although the answers to these questions will vary depending on the level of service you’ve signed up for, it is essential to ask these. Nothing slows down a move quite like a moving company arriving to load boxes onto the truck only to find that there are no boxes to move. Be sure that you are clear on which items, if any, will be packed by the moving company, and try to have everything ready by the time the truck arrives.

What Level of Moving Service Do I Need?

There are all kinds of moving services and finding the type that is best for you can depend on a few things. Most moving companies offer simple moving services like loading boxes, furniture, and appliances onto the truck or into a van securely and getting them to the new destination.

Some moving companies offer full-service moves. This level of service means that the company will come into your home and pack everything safely for the move before loading it into the truck. Clearly, this level of service is much more expensive, but it can be a great way to take the stress of the move off your shoulders.

Whichever service you decide is best for you, be sure you clarify what is expected of you before the movers arrive.

How Long Should the Move Take?

Depending on the level of service and the distance of your move, it can take anywhere from a day or so to two weeks to get your home entirely moved from moving day to the delivery of your things at the new location.

Most movers take around eight to twelve hours to pack the average home, which is an all-day project. Then, there’s the drive to be made afterward. If you have booked a complete service like this, you can expect the move to be finished by the following day, if you’re only moving across the city or a short distance.

Long-distance moves take much longer because of the need to drive your things across the country. This process usually takes anywhere from ten days to two weeks, just depending on traffic, weather conditions, and the distance of the move.

Lastly, if your moving company is simply loading the boxes and unloading them at the new location, you’ll easily be able to have your home packed up in a few hours.

Will a Standard Moving Company Move My Car?

No, most moving companies no longer ship cars. Although moving companies have done this in the past, it proved to be more problematic than anything for both the customer and the company. Before things changed, the car would be loaded onto the truck, and the household items and furniture would be packed in around the car. This led to a lot of damage claims against moving companies, so most movers no longer offer this service.

Some companies will still tow a vehicle behind the moving van. This practice can lead to complications with insurance, so it is uncommon.
